This gorgeous statement necklace is made from a naturally wave-worn piece of driftwood found on Washington’s pacific coast. It features an inlay of 3 beach stones found on the same beach as the wood. The pendant measures just over 5” wide by 1” tall at its largest points. Tamarisk is an ornamental species turned invasive, dramatically altering riparian ecosystems in the arid west. Managing tamarisk has proven difficult, as while they’ve caused destruction and loss of native species, they’ve provided critical nesting habitat for migratory bird populations. Learning where and how to mitigate tamarisk continues to be a difficult exercise, with so many complex relationships to weigh.
I love the evolving story of tamarisk, for it forces us to look at the long view. Our decisions often have lasting impacts for so many beyond ourselves. Each of us holds the capacity for both destruction and creation, and we live in the space between.
